In early 2000, the Peterborough & District Labour Council embarked on a project to erect a commemorative sculpture that would be dedicated to workers.
The Council partnered with The City of Peterborough who contributed a substantial amount of money. In addition, the city contributed a permanent location in their newly developed Millenium Walkway by the riverfront. Together, they commissioned James Smith to create a sculpture.
Committed to raising their share, the sculpture committee commenced with a vigorous fund raising program. A successful chocolate sales drive led the way, followed by tremendous financial support from union head offices and their locals.

This sculpture has now taken its rightful place among other large impressive monuments in Peterborough. It will remain for many, many years to be enjoyed by the community and visitors to our area alike.
