43 people attended the annual Labour Council Luncheon, sponsored by the Peterborough and District Labour Council, on Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at The Navy Club. Michael Hurley, President of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions, Canadian Union of Public Employees, was the guest speaker on the theme of "How Labour can help save health care." Brother Hurley, as a participant in last autumn’s Ontario Health Care Tour, brought his unique insight on the issue of so-called "P3's" - public/private partnerships - which he reported as having devastated the health care system in Britain. A video on the effects of health care privatization will be provided by CUPE and shown at either the May or June meeting of the Council.
Participants at the Luncheon included members of ATU Local 1320; CAW Locals 524, 830 and 1996; CUPE Locals 1943 and 2280; CUPW Local 590; the Family Coalition Party; the New Democratic Party; OPSEU Locals 345, 351 and 352; OSSTF Distinct 14; and the United Citizens Organization.
The Labour Council has been working with the Peterborough Health Coalition to actively promote the provisions of the Romanow Report on Health Care. The Council has helped to collect about 1,500 signatures on a petition to save public health care - including the names of Peterborough's MP and MPP. The Council will be sponsoring a bus to take concerned citizens to the Public Health Care Rally in Toronto on May 10.
