Labour Council Luncheon

April 28, 2004 - Royal Canadian Legion Hall, Peterborough

62 trade union members and supporters attended the annual Labour Council Luncheon at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall on Murray Street. Guest speaker for the luncheon was Leah Casselman, President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, who spoke on the problems in dealing with the new Ontario government. Sister Casselman reported that Ontario’s senior bureaucracy, whose actions stymied reforms by the 1990-95 NDP government, were promoting a philosophy of so-called “compromise” and “balance” which allows cuts of vital public services by the Liberals to seem reasonable. These bureaucrats, in turn, receive bonuses for employee layoffs in their departments. Peterborough MPP Jeff Leal was at the luncheon and, hopefully, got the message.

A wide range from union locals and organizations attended, including members of CAW Locals 524, 830 and 1996, the Council of Canadians, CUPE Local 1943, CUPW Local 590, the Lindsay and District Labour Council, the NDP (including federal candidate Linda Slavin), OECTA, OFFTF District 14, OPSEU Locals 345, 351, 352 and 362, SEIU Local 1.on, and the Workers Health and Safety Centre.

A collection was taken up, with $300 presented to Dawn Bott, union steward for Service Employees International Union Local 1.on Peterborough Humane Society workers. Door prize draw winning tickets were passed to Dawn so that she could collect shirts and hats for her fellow workers at the Humane Society.
