Wonderful weather greets the 14th annual Labour Day Picnic
Just under 500 people attended the 14th annual Labour Day Picnic on a mild, sunny day at Nicholl's Oval in Peterborough on Monday, September 6, 2004 from 12 to 3 pm. There were over 100 union member attendees from 40 different union locals, some of whom came from as far away as Ottawa and New York State. We had hamburgers, hot dogs, fruit juice, granola bars, ice cream, music, draw prizes for adults and children — with the Bear Hug Band providing our ‘music magic’ entertainment — and concluding with children's races.
We dropped a lot of the extras from previous years. No Bouncy Castle, mini-golf, popcorn, etc. It seemed to work very well, giving us more of a picnic atmosphere. People were able to gather their lawn chairs around the pavilion to hear the music and enjoy some free eats.
Displays were set up by CUPE Local 504 (City of Peterborough outside workers, whose jobs are under threat by privatization) and the Industrial Workers of the World (who sold their newspaper and books). The Labour Council table handed out 400 packages of Buy Canadian/Buy Union Label materials, 40 CDs of worker songs and a whole box of our 2004/2005 Labour Reviews.
Thanks go to Margot Marshall for again organizing a great event; to Dave Nickle and Ken English for a fine job on the barbecue, to Dean Shewring and John Ball on reception, to Keith Riel for providing music, and to Marion and Ken Burton, Steve Madill, Sherry-Lynn McMahon, Dan Murphy and others who filled in everywhere to distribute food, drink and dessert. Thanks to Dan and Stephen Burton for aiding our set-up. Thanks also to Bill Astell and his enthusiastic team of helpers (nice to see how busy you were, Leroy!) for conducting the children's running and sack races. Finally, thanks to the CLC for their contribution of union label materials and prizes and to all those businesses (Pepsico QTG, Minute Maid, Shish-Kabob Hut, Brant Office Supply, Shoppers Drug Mart (Aylmer St. N.), M&M Meats, Canada Post, Peterborough Chrysler, CUPW Local 590 and World’s Finest Chocolates) who donated food and prizes.
